On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, Peter Skaves, chief scientist and technical advisor for advanced avionics for the Federal Aviation Administration gives some of the agency's latest guidance on how commercial airlines can protect connected systems onboard.
The episode features the presentation Skaves gave during the recent Global Connected Aircraft Summit's Cabin Chats 2020 program that took place Sept. 22-24. You can view all of the sessions from Cabin Chats on-demand for free here with email registration.
Skaves has been with the FAA for 29 years, publishing numerous white papers on issues such as aircraft systems information security protection, systems safety, and development assurance processes, software, electronic flight bag, communication systems, and Technical Standard Orders (TSO) for security consideration.
"We believe that the greatest threat is the exploitation of aircraft electronic access points via public networks such as the internet or counterfeit computer integrated circuits," Skaves said during the presentation.

Gulfstream first unveiled the G700 in 2019 and expects to make its first customer deliveries in 2022.
Davis has previously spoken at the live version of the Global Connected Aircraft Summit in 2017, and is one of the industry’s leading experts on advancements for cockpit avionics, connectivity and all things flying.

On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, we feature an interactive roundtable session from the second installment of the Global Connected Aircraft Summit's 2020 "Cabin Chats" series that occurred Sept. 22-24.
Daniel Iriarte, a member of the Onboard Product-WiFi/IFE team at Aeromexico, joined a panel discussion moderated by Mark Holmes, editorial director for Via Satellite, and other guests including Intelsat Principal Product Marketing Manager for Aero, Khali Heath, and Director of Aero Products, Mark Richman. Iriarte took questions from all three panelists and the audience, while also engaging in a unique discussion with one of the three companies that provides in-flight Internet service across their aircraft.
The discussion provides some unique insight into how Intelsat will move forward with its plans to close an acquisition of Gogo's commercial aviation IFC business, while Iriarte also provides some perspective on why his airline is keeping the Wi-Fi service active across its entire fleet despite the economic impact of COVID-19 forcing a major internal restructuring.

Valour Consultancy recently published an update to its connectivity tracker for the second quarter, and Welch provides perspectives on how the drop in air passenger demand and impact of COVID-19 related travel restrictions and policies are impacting airlines, vendors, service providers and aircraft installation and modification companies. Welch also gives some insight on Intelsat's recent acquisition of Gogo's commercial aviation business, and next generation IFC networks that are still in development with disruptive potential.

In a May 7 blog, NVIDIA, one of the world’s largest suppliers of graphics process units and computer chips for video gaming and automotive electronics, among other industries, explained how American Airlines is using its data science workstations to integrate machine learning into its air cargo operations planning. During this interview, Levene expands on other airline and aerospace use cases of those same data science workstations and how they’re opening up new opportunities for efficiency improvements.

On this episode of the Connected Aircraft Podcast, we discuss a recent study on the risks of in-flight COVID-19 transmissions with Arnold Barnett, a professor of management science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Barnett recently published a study using recent flight, COVID-19 positive cases and other data and research results to approximate the probability that an air traveler in coach will contract COVID-19 on a US domestic flight two hours long, both when all coach seats are full and when all but middle seats are full.
